NRA Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home

The NRA Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home course teaches the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential for avoiding dangerous confrontations and for the safe, effective, and responsible use of a concealed pistol for self-defense outside the home. This is Level One of the NRA’s two-level program: nine hours of classroom and range instruction with approximately 100 rounds fired. Students should already hold the defensive pistol skills taught in NRA Basics of Personal Protection In the Home (certificate, documented equivalent, or an in-class skills check). Level Two, with advanced shooting skills and an additional five hours of range time, is offered separately for graduates.

  • Concealed-carry methods, holsters, and daily-carry gear

Legal aspects of self-defense

  • Use-of-force law as it applies to concealed carry outside the home
  • Taught by a licensed attorney, qualified law-enforcement officer, or state-certified instructor, as NRA curriculum requires

Level One range qualification

  • Approximately 100 rounds of supervised live-fire practice
  • Level One course completion certificate (Level Two available separately for graduates)
